Finding the Best Voice Over for Your Project

If you approach a specialist production company, they are likely to have a set of voice over artists for you to pick from (see voice over artist). Despite this, you may listen to the range of artists they have to offer, only to find that the voices you need are not there. You are eligible to specify that you're unhappy with the voice over you are supplied with if that is the case. If you are unhappy with the voice over artist, an open casting call should then take place.

An open casting call is a straightforward process and will enable you to find a voice to suit your task. Having selected a few potential voice over artists, each artist will complete a demo read, where they read through your script. You will then be sent the script to listen to (usually an MP3 file), so you can listen to each of the voice overs.

Tips for Choosing the Correct Voice

In order to obtain the right voice over for your project (see female voice over) for your project, there are a number of considerations to take on board. The vital point is that when selecting your voice over, you are choosing a representative of your company. Some helpful advise here can be to get a piece of paper and note down the words that best describe your company. Doing this means you can refer back to these words when listening to the voice over artist, in order to see if the voice suits the description of your company.

This may sound a little strange, but it really does work! For instance, a beauty salon may describe their business as "a relaxing and peaceful retreat", whilst an estate agency may describe their business as "professional, friendly and target-driven". From reading these two descriptions, I'm sure you're imagining that these two businesses require two very different voices.

Test the Water by Listening To Variety of Voices

The more voices you listen to, the better idea you will have in terms of what you're looking for. Listening to at least 5 voices is advisable in order to get the right voice representation for your company. You may already know whether you require a male or female voice, and the age range you wish the actor to be. No matter how specific your voice needs may be, testing out voices will benefit you. By testing out voices on the age demographic and gender you want to target and see which voice speaks out to you most.

If this is a long-running project, try to consider the longevity of the voice. Research shows that using the same voice-over in multiple ads can boost the performance. So, consider whether you will be requiring this voice over actor again in future commercials.

What To Do Once You've Found Your Voice

Having chosen your voice over actor, your chosen artist will then complete a final read through. The final voice recording can be tweaked by the audio producer and will then await approval by the client. If you feel any further changes need to be made, speaking up straight away is advised.

We understand that choosing the right voice over actor for your project can be a hassle, but as long as you take your time - you are certain to be content with the end result and locate the ideal voice for your business.
